The cerebral hemispheres, myths and truths
It is common in our days to listen to the classic phrase: “If you are creative you use plus the right hemisphere and if you are analytical then you use plus the left hemisphere of the brain” thus also to find us us with a variety of courses, applications and documents that teach to us to obtain a perfect harmony between both hemispheres. But, we really used a hemisphere more than another one according to the task that we carried out?
One has become general knowledge for the majority of the people who the left hemisphere is dominant for the language and the right hemisphere, on the other hand, is implied with greater depth in the emotional processing and represents the emotional states of the other people. Nevertheless, the differences between these hemispheres are not as clear as it makes think spread myth us so. For example, the right hemisphere is involved in the processing of some of the aspects of the language, as the intonation and the emphasis.
The differences between these hemispheres are not as clear as it makes think spread myth us so
The information that we have on the functional differences of the brain comes from remarkable studies on the divided brain at beginnings of years 70, in patients to whom it had as a last resort to cut the hard body to him (the connection fibers enter hemispheres both) for the treatment for the epilepsy. Between the most recognized investigators we found to psychologists Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga, who presented stimuli to a single hemisphere simultaneously, and discovered that two halves of the brain acted as independent organizations with different styles of processing.
But it is important to remember that in the healthy people both cerebral hemispheres well are connected and they have been developed to work altogether, sharing information through bridge to which we called hard body. The neurocientíficos that work nowadays in this field are interested in knowing how this coordination takes place.
Also we must consider that the type of tasks of life daily that they require of a hemisphere in specific, does not adjust perfectly to this type of Left category straight. We take the example from the creativity. We can find useful the simple explanation to divide the creative and repetitive tasks, but in the reality these tasks are more complex and exist many ways to be creative.
Some studies have demonstrated that the right hemisphere seems to be involved more when we have an intuition sparkle. For example, a study found that the activity was greater in the right hemisphere when the participants solved a task through a vision and not by parts. Another study showed that the brief exhibition to a puzzle track was more useful for the right hemisphere that the left one, as if the right hemisphere was more near the answer.
But insight is only a type of creativity. To count histories is another one. One of the most fascinating ideas of the studies of the divided brain was the form in which the left hemisphere participated in the process to invent histories whereas the right hemisphere looked for the explanation, was as Gazzaniga denominated it, the “phenomenon interpreter”. For example, in a study, a patient had to complete a task of magnet coincidence being used his left hand (controlled by the right hemisphere) so that a shovel with an image of a snow storm agrees (that is only in the right hemisphere). Soon he asked himself to him the patient why he had done this. But its left hemisphere (the origin of the word), did not admit to know. In its place, I conspire myself saying that it had arrived at the shovel to clean the hen house (the image who was to him in the left hemisphere was of a bird leg).
This myth has a seductive simplicity
In a general description of the brain divided in the 2002 Gazzaniga it concluded in an article for the magazine Scientific American, based on the phenomenon interpreter and other conclusions, that the left hemisphere “invents and interprets”, whereas the right hemisphere of the brain is “truthful and literal”. This refutes the classic invented myth.
If the scientific evidence contradicts the myth of logical the left hemisphere as and the right hemisphere as creative, then, why one stays effective nowadays supported by diverse professionals? A possible explanation is that this myth has a seductive simplicity. People look for to ask themselves what type of brain I have? They can look for information on the internet and buy applications to orient and to improve his weaker half. It is difficult to fight against that system of beliefs saying that in fact the operation of our brain is much more complicated, but as professional into the mental health we must inform and eliminate a as simplistic myth as he is the one of the form in which our brains really work.
